Artists hoping to call Dokta Brain and pay him to write their next hit may have to look elsewhere for the next few years.
The award-winning songwriter says he has stopped accepting songwriting jobs from fellow musicians until 2030.
Speaking during an appearance on Sanyuka Bigenda Bitya, Dokta Brain explained that he now wants to decide for himself who receives the songs he writes instead of taking calls from artists looking to pay for his services.
I am no longer writing songs for other musicians until 2030. From now on, I will decide for myself who I want to give a song to. I am no longer accepting calls from musicians who want to pay me to write.
Dokta Brain says his decision comes from the drama that can follow when a songwriter works with different artists.
According to him, some musicians get upset when he writes for people they do not get along with.
Others, he says, take offence when he helps an artist they do not want to see succeed.
Musicians can be very difficult. If they have a problem with someone and you help that person, they get angry with you. If they do not want someone to have a hit and you give that person one, they also get angry.
He went on to claim that he sees such tensions more often among female musicians.
I see this happen more with female musicians. Male artists may also feel bitter, but they express it differently and rarely come to you directly to ask why you wrote a song for someone. Female musicians do not always like one another as much as they try to portray.
The decision marks a major shift for a songwriter whose work has contributed to several popular Ugandan songs over the years.
Dokta Brain has written for artists including Winnie Nwagi, Rema Namakula, Sheebah Karungi, Ykee Benda, Grenade Official, Rickman Manrick, Kataleya and Kandle, and Vinka.
He now says the next few years will look different.
Until 2030, Dokta Brain plans to keep control over who gets the songs he writes.
