Think a UGX 10 million monthly salary means you can relax and depend on one source of income? Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police Asan Kasingye thinks otherwise.
Kasingye has urged Ugandans to look beyond their salaries and build multiple streams of income, arguing that a salary alone cannot guarantee a decent standard of living for a family.
Always have and maintain multiple streams of income. Salary alone can never guarantee you a decent standard of living with your family.
In his view, even the wealthy do not put all their money in one place.
A person may invest in a grand hotel, then put money into another business such as transport. Kasingye believes middle-income earners should borrow the same strategy.
And even a person earning UGX 10 million a month, according to him, should still look for another way to make money.
Even if you earn UGX 10 million per month as salary, go into agriculture, for example, plant coffee or rear goats if you have land. Have an SME, say manufacturing tissue, have a grocery, stall or a fancy hair salon somewhere.
Coffee, goats, a grocery, a salon, manufacturing, boda transport, and buying goods for resale all make his list.
Those with money to invest can also explore unit trusts, bonds and treasury bills.
Kasingye then turned his attention to young people, urging them to make social media work for them through online trade, influencing, and account monetisation instead of simply scrolling and posting.
His advice comes down to one rule: do not leave your financial future in the hands of one salary.
