Meta Plans Two-Hour Daily Limit for Young Facebook and Instagram Users

Meta is facing one of the biggest bills in social media history after agreeing to pay up to $16.68 billion to settle claims that Facebook and Instagram were designed in ways that kept children hooked.

The deal brings a dramatic end to a major legal battle involving U.S. states, which accused Meta of misleading the public about the safety of its platforms and exposing young users to harmful and addictive features.

Meta denies wrongdoing, but the settlement could force major changes to how teenagers use Facebook and Instagram.

The fight was all about young users

At the heart of the case was a simple but explosive accusation: that Meta designed its platforms to keep children and teenagers scrolling.

The states argued that the company knew young people could face harm from excessive social media use but failed to adequately protect them. They also accused Meta of improperly collecting children’s personal data.

Meta pushed back against those allegations and has not admitted wrongdoing.

Still, with the case already in court and the potential financial penalties hanging over the company, Meta chose to settle.

A midnight cutoff is coming

The agreement is not just about money.

Meta has agreed to introduce stronger protections for users under 18, including stricter age verification, limits on daily use and overnight restrictions.

Under the reported measures, teen accounts could face a two-hour daily usage limit and a block on using the platforms between midnight and 6 am.

That means the settlement could change the way millions of teenagers use Facebook and Instagram.

However, the agreement still requires judicial approval before it takes effect.

Meta avoids an even bigger nightmare

The settlement also spares Meta from a legal battle that could have dragged on for weeks and put some of the company’s biggest names under intense scrutiny.

Instead of waiting to find out how much worse the final bill could become, Meta has agreed to a deal that places a cap on its potential payment while forcing changes to its platforms.

For Meta, the price is enormous.

For Facebook and Instagram’s youngest users, though, the bigger question is whether the new restrictions will actually make a difference.
