Singer and songwriter Shena Skies has opened up about the frustrations that come with having immense talent but not receiving the level of recognition and success she believes matches her abilities.
Shena, who has written several hit songs for some of Uganda’s biggest artists while also pursuing her own music career, says her ability to create music has been both a blessing and a curse.
Despite contributing to successful records, she feels she has not enjoyed the same level of numbers, fame and visibility as some of the artists she has written for.
It’s both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing to be able to create something from my mind, to think about it and people all over the world enjoy the things that I have come up with, but it’s also a curse.
The songwriter compared her situation to football superstar Lionel Messi playing in Kawempe instead of competing on the biggest stages of world football, arguing that talent can become frustrating when it is not given the platform it deserves.
“I feel like when you’re this talented, it’s like Messi playing in Kawempe and not where he’s playing right now,” she added.
Shena further described herself as an underutilised Messi, suggesting that having the ability to produce exceptional work without reaching the very top of the industry can eventually become frustrating.
She admitted that there have been moments when she has felt angry with Ugandans for not fully appreciating or supporting her talent. However, she says she eventually lets go of the frustration because there is little she can do about it.
“You become angry at them and let go because what can you do?” Shena said.
