President Yoweri Museveni has told security officers and Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) to stop imposing unnecessary restrictions on bars and nightlife, saying his “Bazukulu” should be allowed to enjoy themselves.
Speaking during a security address in Nakasero, Kampala, Museveni questioned why officials should interfere with young Ugandans who are peacefully enjoying their time in bars.
The President’s remarks come amid a renewed debate over attempts by some local authorities to enforce early closing hours on bars and entertainment venues.
Museveni said Ugandans should be able to enjoy the peace and freedom in the country without unnecessary interference, cautioning security officials against excessive restrictions on nightlife.
His comments could offer some relief to Uganda’s entertainment and hospitality industry, which has repeatedly faced uncertainty over bar operating hours and enforcement measures issued by local authorities.
The debate over nightlife restrictions has also placed bar owners, event organisers and entertainment promoters in a difficult position, particularly when directives from different authorities appear to conflict.
Museveni’s latest message, however, puts the emphasis on security without unnecessarily disrupting people who are peacefully enjoying themselves.
For the country’s nightlife crowd, the President’s message was simple: let the Bazukulu enjoy the party.
