Tim Cook has officially stepped down as Apple‘s CEO after 15 years, ending his long run at the top of the world’s most valuable technology companies.
Cook handed the role to John Ternus on September 1, 2026, and moved into the position of Apple’s executive chairman.
A day earlier, Cook reflected on his final day as CEO in a message to Apple’s community, making it clear that he is not leaving the company entirely.

Cook took over from Steve Jobs in 2011 and oversaw Apple’s huge expansion during his tenure, including growth in services, wearables and other products beyond the iPhone.
Now, Ternus begins his tenure at a major moment for Apple, with the company preparing for its next major product event on September 9.
While Cook has left the CEO role, his new position as executive chairman will keep him involved as Apple enters its next chapter.
