Ugandan Uber users will have to find new ride-hailing options after the global transport company announced its exit from the country after roughly a decade.
Uber said it would stop operating in Uganda and Nigeria from September 2, 2026, following a review of its business priorities and investment plans.
After a thorough review, we have taken the difficult decision to wind down operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective September 2, 2026.
The decision ends Uber’s run in Uganda, which began in Kampala in June 2016.
The company entered the market with hundreds of drivers and introduced app-based ride-hailing to a transport sector that had largely relied on traditional taxis and other forms of public transport.
Over the years, Uber expanded its listed Ugandan service locations to include Jinja, although Kampala remained the centre of its operations.
Uber did not disclose how many drivers were using its platform in Uganda when it announced the withdrawal.
The company said it will support drivers, riders and local employees through the transition.
Despite leaving Uganda and Nigeria, Uber stressed that it has no plans to abandon Africa.
The company said it remains committed to Sub-Saharan Africa and will continue operating in other markets across the continent.
Why Uber Is Restructuring
Uber’s Uganda exit comes alongside a major global restructuring that will eliminate about 3,300 jobs.
The cuts represent roughly 10% of the company’s global workforce, which stood at about 34,000 employees at the end of 2025.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said Uber’s rapid expansion created too many management layers and fragmented responsibilities, making decision-making slower.
The company now plans to simplify its structure and reduce management layers while cutting fully remote positions to about 1% of its workforce.
Uber also plans to redirect some of the savings toward growth and emerging areas such as autonomous transportation.
The company expects to invest more than $10 billion in robotaxis in the coming years as it prepares for a transport industry increasingly shaped by self-driving technology.
In Uganda, the withdrawal ends a decade-long run for one of the country’s best-known app-based ride-hailing services.
