Former Speaker Anita Among has been exonerated.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke has confirmed,on Monday, during a press briefing, although he says there are still due processes to be followed before the matter is fully wrapped up.
Rusoke said an investigation had been running, but confirmed that Among had been cleared in the latest development.
“So far, what I can say, but we shall be briefing you more about this, but I can confirm that, yes, she was exonerated and there are due processes that will be followed because there was an investigation running. And those other, may I call them briefings, in how the investigation shall de-escalate.” he said
He said Police will give more details later on what happens to the investigation and other issues connected to it.
Anita Annet Among rose to become Speaker of Uganda’s 11th Parliament in March 2022, after previously serving as Deputy Speaker. She remained one of the most influential figures in Parliament until the end of the 11th Parliament.
Her troubles in 2026 intensified after the Inspectorate of Government opened investigations into allegations concerning possible breaches of the Leadership Code Act. The probe followed a petition by lawyers and activists raising questions about her wealth and conduct. Reports said investigators were examining allegations including corruption, illicit enrichment and abuse of office.
The matter later escalated, with reports that Among was placed under house arrest as investigations into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment and abuse of office continued. Among has denied wrongdoing.
By August, last week, the issue took another dramatic turn when reports emerged that President Yoweri Museveni had pardoned Among and ordered her release from house arrest, with criminal prosecution against her halted.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, was central to the announcement. Muhoozi communicated on his socials that Museveni had decided to forgive Among and ordered that she be released from house arrest.
Among subsequently thanked President Museveni and Gen Muhoozi for what she described as their mercy. She also praised Muhoozi’s professionalism during the period and said she looked forward to continuing to serve her constituents as Bukedea Woman MP.
The Muhoozi development is important because the issue had moved beyond an ordinary political controversy into a matter involving investigations, house arrest, possible prosecution and eventually presidential forgiveness.
