Once every month, at a dance studio in Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb the sound of drums fills the air as a group of men and women move in unison. There are no treadmills, weight racks or mirrored walls. Instead, participants follow rhythms rooted in African tradition, stepping, swaying and sweating their way through a workout that feels more like a cultural celebration than a fitness session.
This is Bisoko Wellness African Dance Fitness, an initiative founded by dancer and wellness instructor Ephraim Walakira. At a time when Uganda is grappling with increasingly sedentary lifestyles, work-related stress and a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, the programme is offering an alternative approach to health and wellness, one that draws on African music, dance and community.
For Walakira, the idea behind Bisoko Wellness emerged from a simple observation: many people struggle to maintain exercise routines because they view workouts as difficult, repetitive or disconnected from their everyday lives………..CONTINUE READING…………
