Are You Healing or Just Getting Better at Avoiding Things?

Healing and avoidance can look surprisingly similar from the outside.

You stop talking to certain people. You stop visiting certain places. You refuse to entertain certain conversations. You become more protective of your time, your emotions and your peace. Eventually, life becomes quieter.

And because it is quieter, you assume you have healed.

But what happens when the thing you have been avoiding finds you again?

That might be the real test.

Healing is being able to encounter something that once hurt you without allowing it to regain control over you. Avoidance, on the other hand, is arranging your life so carefully that you never have to find out whether it still does.

There is nothing wrong with distance. Sometimes, distance is necessary. You do not need to repeatedly expose yourself to harmful situations just to prove that you have grown. Boundaries are part of healing too.

The Difference Is Fear

If you no longer go somewhere because you genuinely do not want to, that is a choice. However, if you cannot go there because you are terrified of what you might feel, perhaps the wound still has more influence over you than you realize.

The same applies to relationships. Someone hurts you, so you decide never to trust that deeply again. It works. Nobody can betray you because nobody gets close enough.

You might call that strength.

But the person who hurt you is still controlling every relationship that came after them.

They may no longer be in your life, yet the fear they created is still deciding how much of yourself you are willing to give to someone else.

Healing Does Not Mean Forgetting

Real healing does not necessarily erase pain. Instead, it changes your relationship with it. You remember without collapsing. You encounter reminders without losing yourself.

Over time, you become capable of opening doors again while having enough wisdom to know which ones should remain closed.

That does not mean you have to return to places or people that hurt you. Healing is not about proving that nothing can affect you anymore. Rather, it is about knowing that you can face difficult emotions without allowing them to control your choices.

What Are You Really Protecting Yourself From?

Sometimes, avoidance feels like peace because it removes the thing that causes the discomfort.

You stop going there, so you no longer feel anxious. You stop trusting people, so nobody can betray you. You stop having difficult conversations, so nothing can upset you.

For a while, that can feel like progress.

But if your entire life starts revolving around making sure you never experience the same pain again, the wound may still be making your decisions for you.

That is the part worth paying attention to.

One Protects You. The Other Prepares You.

Avoidance says:

“I will never let this happen again.”

Healing says:

Even if life hurts me again, I trust myself to survive it.

One protects you from the world.

The other prepares you to live in it.

And perhaps that is the real question to ask yourself: are you becoming freer, or are you simply becoming better at building a life where nothing can hurt you?

Because healing is not about creating a life where pain is impossible.

It is about becoming someone who trusts themselves enough to know that pain, when it comes, does not have to destroy them.
