Are You Private, or Are You Afraid to Be Seen?

Privacy has become fashionable.

“Move in silence.”

“Protect your peace.”

“Nobody needs to know your business.”

There is wisdom in all three.

After all, we live in an age where people can know what you ate, where you travelled, who you are dating and what argument you had before they have ever shaken your hand. Naturally, some things deserve protection.

Even so, there is another extreme that receives far less attention.

What happens when nobody knows you at all?

Your followers may know what you post, while your colleagues may only know the person they see at work. Even the people you call friends may never see what lies beneath the surface.

There is a difference, however, between privacy and emotional invisibility.

When Privacy Becomes Fear

Healthy privacy means choosing what belongs to you and what you are comfortable sharing. In other words, you can protect certain parts of your life without shutting people out completely.

Fear, on the other hand, works differently. It tells you that allowing anyone to see your uncertain, struggling or imperfect side gives them ammunition.

So, little by little, you reveal the highlights and hide the human being.

Of course, the danger of oversharing is obvious. Once something is public, you cannot completely control where it goes. For that reason, not everybody deserves access to your personal life.

Still, complete secrecy carries its own cost.

Human beings are social creatures. More importantly, we need to be known. That does not mean everybody needs access to us, or even that many people do, but we all need somebody.

That kind of connection requires trust. It also requires a willingness to be seen beyond the polished version of yourself.

Ultimately, a healthy life probably exists somewhere between broadcasting every emotion and pretending you do not have any.

So, share selectively. Trust gradually. Keep some things sacred.

At the same time, allow a few people to see behind the curtains.
