The installation of a successor to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has taken a dramatic new twist following opposition from Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Tooro Kingdom authorities to the naming of Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi as the new Omukama of Tooro.
The development has sparked fresh questions over the succession to the Tooro throne, coming just days before the burial of the late Omukama Oyo, who passed away at the age of 34.
According to the late Omukama Oyo’s 2022 Will, a clear line of succession to the Tooro throne was set out, with his son designated as the first heir and successor.
The Will also stipulates that should his son be unable to assume the throne, succession would then pass to his cousin, Prince Komwiswa Yoweri, the son of Musuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki.
It further states that if Prince Komwiswa Yoweri is also unable to take up the throne, the succession would then pass to another cousin, Prince Nyaika Solomon, also a son of Musuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki, who is described in the Will as the late Omukama’s paternal uncle.
The succession provisions contained in the 2022 Will have now emerged at the centre of the unfolding dispute over who should take over the Tooro throne following the death of Omukama Oyo.
The latest development is expected to fuel further debate within the kingdom as preparations continue for the burial of the late monarch and the eventual installation of his successor.
