Rev. Fr. Charles Oyo Amooti of the Babiito Royal Clan has explained what he believes would be required for any of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s children to be considered for the Tooro Kingdom throne.
Speaking to the media, Rev. Fr. Amooti emphasized that the Babiito clan does not rely on information circulating in the public domain when determining matters concerning the royal family and succession.
He explained that, according to Tooro cultural practices, when a child is born into the royal clan, the child is formally introduced to the elders, after which a number of traditional ceremonies and rituals are performed.
The child is also given a name and a celebration is held to formally recognize the new member of the clan.
“We have heard some people talk about there is a child or the children of King Oyo, but we as members of the clan, we don’t pick information from the street. Here in Tooro, when a child is born, this child is introduced to the elders and they perform a number of ceremonies and rituals. They name the child, and they have a celebration.”
Rev. Fr. Amooti further explained that when a child is identified as being destined for leadership within the Kingdom, additional steps are taken to prepare them for the responsibilities that come with such a position.
According to him, the child is taken out of the Palace and raised through formal training designed to help them understand the Kingdom, its traditions and their potential responsibilities as they grow into adulthood.
“When this child is to be destined for leadership in the Kingdom, they will take this child out of the Palace and bring the child up with formal training so that this child would be able to understand what the Kingdom is, but also to have this child grow from one stage to another into a mature adult who has the capacity to make a difference.”
His remarks come amid heightened debate over the succession of the late Omukama Oyo, with questions continuing to emerge over whether his child could have a claim to the Tooro throne.
