Spice Girls fans expected a reunion announcement. Instead, the group revealed a new collection celebrating 30 years of “Spice.”
The group teased fans earlier this week with a cryptic post promising a major announcement on September 10. That sparked speculation that Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell could finally reunite.
The announcement turned out to be “The Singles Collection,” a 14-disc box set arriving November 6.
The official collection will bring together the group’s singles, B-sides, rare remixes and previously unreleased recordings. It will also include four unreleased demos on the CD edition, including “Do You Think About Me,” one of the group’s earliest recordings.
The five members also contributed new anniversary messages to the collection.
The announcement disappointed fans who had hoped the cryptic teaser would lead to a reunion tour. Some fans openly joked online about preparing to spend money on concert tickets, only to discover that the group had announced a box set instead.
A full reunion remains uncertain. Mel C said earlier this year that she still felt optimistic about seeing the group together again.
Who knows when? But I still feel very optimistic, and I keep my fingers crossed that you will see the Spice Girls together at some point in the future.
For now, the Spice Girls are giving fans new material from their archives rather than the reunion many were hoping for.
