The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called for the release of political prisoners arrested over what he described as minor politically motivated offences.
The Prime Minister of the Buganda Kingdom appealed while addressing the Buganda Parliament, where he spoke on several national issues, including his opposition to the controversial Sovereignty Bill that has recently sparked public debate.
During his address, Mayiga urged authorities to release individuals still in detention following the concluded electoral season, arguing that reconciliation and national healing should now take precedence.
He specifically mentioned Eddie Mutwe and his co-accused, saying they should be freed since elections are over and tensions should be de-escalated.
Mutwe, who serves as a bodyguard to opposition leader Bobi Wine, was arrested alongside other security aides on allegations of stealing a mobile phone and a sweater, accusations the Katikkiro described as petty and unworthy of prolonged detention.
Mayiga questioned the strength of the prosecution’s case, noting the absence of convincing evidence and expressing concern over reports of torture allegedly suffered by the accused while in custody.
He emphasized the need for unity among Ugandans after the election period, calling for calm, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence.
“Since the election period is finished, we ask that peace and calm be restored. Those arrested over petty political issues should be released.”
The Katikkiro concluded by urging leaders and citizens alike to embrace dialogue and forgiveness as the country moves forward after the elections.
