Museveni appoints Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi as Deputy Chief Justice

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi as Uganda’s new Deputy Chief Justice, pending approval by Parliament.

Justice Kazibwe, who currently serves on the Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court, is set to replace Justice Flavian Zeija. Justice Zeija was elevated in January this year to Chief Justice following the retirement of Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo.

In line with constitutional procedure, the appointment of the Deputy Chief Justice has been forwarded to Parliament for vetting and approval before it takes effect.

If confirmed, the Deputy Chief Justice will deputise the Chief Justice in the overall administration of the Judiciary and will also preside over both the Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.

In a related development, President Museveni has also appointed Agnes Alum as the new Chief Registrar. The position fell vacant after Sarah Langa Siu was appointed High Court judge last year. Since then, Pamela Lamunu Ocaya has been serving in an acting capacity for over a year.
