Nothing makes adulthood feel real quite like apartment hunting.
One day, you are living comfortably at home, and the next, you are scrolling through rental listings in Kampala, comparing prices, calculating budgets, and wondering how a simple one-bedroom apartment became so expensive.
It is a strange feeling.
Finding your first place is exciting because it represents independence. It is your space, your rules, and your opportunity to create a home that reflects who you are. But it is also a reality check.
For many recent university graduates, the dream is simple: find an affordable apartment in a safe area, close enough to work or school, and start building a life of your own. The problem is that everyone seems to be looking for the same thing, and few of us can actually afford it.
You quickly learn that rent is not the only expense. There are utility bills, groceries, internet subscriptions, transportation costs, furniture, security deposits, and countless little expenses nobody warned you about. Suddenly, that apartment that seemed affordable does not look so affordable anymore.
The funniest part is that many of us are apartment hunting without even having the funds ready. We are browsing listings, sending them to group chats, discussing neighborhoods, and planning our future homes while our bank accounts quietly remind us that we are still figuring things out.
Yet despite the challenges, there is something incredibly rewarding about imagining a space of your own. Whether it is a small apartment, a shared flat, or a student residence, it becomes a place where memories will be made.
Apartment hunting is more than just looking for somewhere to live. It is one of the first signs that we are building lives for ourselves. While that realization can be scary, it is also something worth celebrating because we are getting older, we are growing, and somehow, despite all the uncertainty, we are finding our way.
Although, after seeing some of these rental prices, maybe we should not leave our parents’ houses just yet.
