Ugandan hip-hop heavyweight Tom Mayanja, popularly known as The Mith, has opened up about the unexpected and chaotic journey behind his legendary verse on the Amaaso Remix.
The star-studded Swangz Avenue track—which featured Vinka, Winnie Nwagi, and Feffe Bussi—became an instant club banger. However, The Mith recently revealed during an interview on Dembe FM that he was initially terrified of jumping on the project because he was already a massive fan of the original song.
“I was really afraid of being on that song because I really liked the original. The original was dope,” the rapper admitted.
The magic started with a surprise phone call from legendary audio producer and Swangz Avenue co-founder, Benon Mugumbya. At the time, The Mith was traveling back to Kampala from his mother’s village in Butaleja. Benon didn’t beat around the bush; he wanted the rapper’s signature flow on the remix, and he needed it recorded that very day.
With The Mith still a grueling four hours away from the city, the request felt nearly impossible.
“He told me the studio would be open until night, so I told him to send me the audio,” The Mith recalled.
Even after listening to the instrumental on the road, self-doubt crept in. The rapper questioned if his hip-hop style would blend with the dancehall-infused pop track. He questioned Benon, asking, “Are you sure?” to which the producer confidently replied, “If it doesn’t work, we won’t use it.”
Spurred on by Benon’s reassurance, The Mith penned his now-famous verse right there in the passenger seat. He raced straight from the highway into the Swangz Avenue studios to lay down the vocals.
What started as a high-pressure, nerve-wracking gamble quickly turned into musical gold. The Mith’s verse became one of the absolute standout moments of the remix, earning massive praise for its lyricism and heavy energy. Looking back, the veteran rapper remains incredibly grateful.
“It became the monster it is. I’m humbled that he thought about me to be on that jam,” he concluded.
