The long-running paternity dispute surrounding the late Kadongo Kamu legend Paul Job Kafeero could be headed for another scientific review after Minister Balaam Barugahara announced plans to seek independent DNA verification from laboratories outside Uganda.
Balaam, who recently stepped in to help mediate the family dispute, said samples collected during the investigation will be sent to either South Africa or the United Kingdom for confirmatory testing following public skepticism over the initial DNA results.
The minister became involved after years of disagreements among individuals claiming to be Kafeero’s biological children, a dispute that ultimately led to the exhumation of the singer’s remains to obtain DNA samples for forensic analysis.
A total of 25 claimants underwent DNA testing, with results released this week at Uganda Police Headquarters in Naguru. The findings confirmed that only four individuals were biologically related to the late musician.
The outcome triggered widespread debate across the country, with many members of the public questioning the results, particularly because some of the unsuccessful claimants bear a striking resemblance to Kafeero.
According to Balaam, consultations with several prominent figures, including singer Mama Phina, Gen. David Sejusa and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, led to the decision to seek an independent review of the findings.
In a post on X, Balaam said, “Mama Phina, Gen. Ssejusa and many others! With help from General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, we shall send the samples to South Africa or the UK for a confirmatory test, and that will be done soon. Thank you for your attention to this Kafeero matter.”
If conducted, the fresh analysis is expected to either affirm or challenge the initial findings released by the Uganda Police Forensic Directorate, which concluded that only Simon Peter Kafeero, Thomas Swazi Kafeero, Elizabeth Nagawa and Benedict Kafeero are the late singer’s biological children.
The proposed independent testing is likely to prolong a paternity saga that has remained one of Uganda’s most widely discussed family disputes in recent years.
