Singer Jose Chameleone has dismissed suggestions that his son, Abba Marcus Mayanja, becoming a father at a young age is a sign that he has failed as a parent.
Speaking in an interview with Douglas Lwanga, the Leone Island boss said parenthood is about guiding children through life’s challenges rather than expecting them to be perfect.
“I haven’t failed as a father yet because a child first makes a mistake, you understand it, then you correct and guide them,” Chameleone said.
The singer explained that many people viewed Abba’s decision to start a family while still young as a mistake, but he does not share that opinion.
Recalling the moment he learned he was going to become a grandfather, Chameleone said Abba broke the news during a phone call.
“He called me and said, ‘Papa, I have some news for you. I have so much news, but which one should I start with?’ I told him to start anywhere, and he said, ‘The first one is that you’re going to become a grandfather this year.’”
Chameleone admitted that his initial reaction as a father was to feel his son was still too young to have a child. However, he said once the pregnancy became a reality, his focus shifted to ensuring Abba embraced the responsibility that comes with parenthood.
“As a person, I was happy. However, as his father, I told him I would have preferred that he became a father later because he is still young. But since the baby is already on the way, if you are ready to take care of your child, then love your girlfriend because someone can become a father at 40 and still fail to be responsible.”
The veteran musician said he also encouraged his son to build a strong and respectful relationship with the child’s mother.
“The last thing I told him was, ‘You have seen me over the years. If you love your wife and she loves you, always look out for each other,’” he said.
Abba Marcus, one of Chameleone’s children, recently welcomed his first child, making the celebrated singer a grandfather.
