Green Flags Are the New Red Flags: Why Healthy Dating Feels Suspicious

By Kasemire Christina Mulinde

For years, dating conversations have revolved around spotting red flags. Does he text back too late? Is she still talking to her ex? Does their “good morning” text feel copied and pasted?

We have become experts at identifying warning signs. But somewhere along the way, the internet started questioning something completely different: What happens when someone seems too perfect?

Welcome to the era where green flags are starting to feel… suspicious.

It sounds ridiculous, but it is becoming a genuine conversation. Spend five minutes on TikTok or scroll through relationship memes, and you will find countless people joking that someone who communicates well, plans dates, respects boundaries, and actually replies on time somehow feels “off.” Not because these things are bad, but because they are unfamiliar.

Many young people grew up watching chaotic romances on television, where love was all about dramatic breakups, jealousy, grand gestures, and emotional rollercoasters. Add in years of situationships, mixed signals, and inconsistent dating experiences, and suddenly healthy behavior can feel almost boring.

Imagine someone who tells you exactly how they feel. They do not disappear for three days. They do not play games. They introduce you to their friends, and they remember the little details about you.

Instead of thinking, “This is healthy,” some people immediately wonder, “What is the catch?”

It has become such a common joke online that people now say things like, “He is too nice. I do not trust him.”

Of course, sometimes that instinct comes from experience. Love bombing is real, and not everyone who seems perfect has good intentions. Some people use kindness as a way to gain trust quickly before showing their true colors.

But there is also another possibility. Sometimes we simply are not used to being treated well.

If your previous relationships involved inconsistency, poor communication, or emotional games, stability can feel unfamiliar. Our brains often mistake what is familiar for what is normal, even if it was never healthy.

Social media does not help either. Every day, we consume thousands of opinions about dating.

One creator says, “If they text you every hour, it is clingy.” Another says, “If they do not text every hour, they are losing interest.” Someone says buying flowers is a green flag. Another says it is manipulation.

At some point, everyone becomes confused.

The internet has almost turned dating into a never-ending investigation where every small action has ten different meanings. Sometimes someone is just… nice. Sometimes they are not secretly plotting anything. Sometimes they genuinely enjoy spending time with you.

Another reason green flags can feel suspicious is that modern dating culture has become obsessed with excitement.

People often mistake unpredictability for chemistry. The emotional highs and lows of toxic relationships can feel addictive, making healthy relationships seem less exciting by comparison.

Healthy relationships usually do not feel like an action movie. They are quieter, more predictable, and less dramatic. While that may not make for viral TikTok stories, it often leads to happier and healthier relationships.

That is not to say we should ignore our instincts. If someone’s behavior feels manipulative or genuinely too good to be true, it is perfectly okay to take your time getting to know them.

The challenge is learning to tell the difference between a real warning sign and a healthy relationship that simply feels unfamiliar. Sometimes, the biggest green flag is not perfection. It is consistency, honesty, and the quiet comfort of knowing exactly where you stand.
