Chuck Russell, Director Behind The Mask and The Scorpion King, Dies at 74

Hollywood filmmaker Chuck Russell, the man behind blockbuster hits like The Mask, Eraser and The Scorpion King, has died at the age of 74.

Russell died unexpectedly at his home in the San Diego area on July 22.

His attorney confirmed his death, but officials have not disclosed the cause.

Across four decades in Hollywood, Russell directed films that helped shape the careers of some of the industry’s biggest stars.

Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz reached new heights with The Mask, while Dwayne Johnson landed his first leading role in The Scorpion King.

Russell also directed Arnold Schwarzenegger in Eraser and revitalised the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise with Dream Warriors before delivering the cult classic The Blob.

His final film, Witchboard, arrived in 2024, bringing to a close a career that left a lasting mark on horror, comedy and action cinema.
