Should a Woman Be a Best Man? Asan Kasingye Gets Ugandans Talking

Should a man choose a woman as his best man?

That question has returned to public debate after retired Assistant Inspector General of Police Asan Kasingye revisited one of Uganda’s most talked-about celebrity weddings.

Using a photo from former media personality Edwin Musiime‘s 2019 wedding to illustrate his point, Kasingye asked:

Men. Why should you have a woman as your ‘Best Man’?

His post brought fresh attention to Musiime’s decision to choose fashion designer Anita Beryl as his best man when he married Christabel Nansubuga.

The choice surprised many people because Ugandan weddings have traditionally reserved the role for another man. While some admired Musiime for doing things differently, others questioned why he broke with a custom many families still value.

Musiime never hid the reason behind his decision.

After the wedding, he explained that Anita had stood by him through some of the hardest chapters of his life. He also said she had built a close friendship with his wife, making her the person he trusted most to stand beside him on his wedding day.

For Musiime, the decision had nothing to do with gender. He chose loyalty over convention.

Years later, Kasingye’s question has reignited the same conversation.

Some Ugandans believe a groom should choose the person he trusts most, regardless of gender. Others insist wedding traditions exist for a reason and should remain unchanged.

Now we want to hear from you. Would you choose your closest friend as your best man, even if that person is a woman, or should the role always go to another man?
