Media personality and nightlife host Sheilah Gashumba has dismissed assumptions that working in Uganda’s entertainment scene means she smokes or uses drugs, saying she has never been interested in either.
Speaking during an interview on Kasuku Live, Gashumba revealed that despite spending years hosting events and working as a nightlife ambassador, she has deliberately stayed away from smoking and other intoxicants.
She said one of the biggest reasons she avoids shisha is hygiene.
According to Gashumba, the condition of some shisha attendants at entertainment venues has completely put her off the practice.
“The people serving are usually very dirty and wear black, yet the heat is coming in the T-shirts and they don’t wash them. They smell so bad,” she said.
She added that watching attendants move from one customer to another carrying the same shisha equipment has only reinforced her decision not to smoke it.
Although she regularly works in clubs and bars where shisha is popular, Gashumba said she has never felt pressured to join in.
Her comments challenge the perception that everyone associated with Kampala’s nightlife indulges in smoking or drug use, insisting that it is possible to enjoy the entertainment scene without taking part in those habits.
