The Kitgum Chief Magistrate’s Court will on September 1 hear further evidence in a case involving a 28-year-old mason accused of repeatedly abusing his elderly mother.
The accused, Kenneth Oyoo, has been accused of insulting his 72-year-old mother, Santa Angom, and repeatedly telling her to leave her matrimonial home.
The case started after Angom reported that Oyoo insulted her in July after she refused to give him tea.
She said she was making tea for four orphaned grandchildren under her care when Oyoo demanded to be served.
When she explained that the tea was not enough for everyone, Oyoo allegedly became angry and used vulgar words against her.
He also allegedly told her to leave the family land and return to her parents in Lumule.
Angom said her son has made the same demand many times, estimating that he has told her to leave on about 10 occasions.
She also accused him of coming home drunk late at night, sometimes around 1am, and kicking her door while demanding food.
The elderly woman further said the children she looks after are afraid of Oyoo because of his behaviour.
Oyoo denied the accusations and asked his mother to withdraw the case, saying they should solve the matter at home because he was her last-born son.
But his father told court that the family had tried many times to help him change without success.
Oyoo’s father, Michael Acaye, has now asked court to punish his son, saying he wants his wife to get a break from the alleged abuse.
Acaye told court that his son has become a source of fear and stress at home.
Acaye said he had paid his son’s school fees before he dropped out. He also accused him of alcoholism and mixing with criminal gangs.
The father further told court that Oyoo had previously spent 20 months in prison after assaulting a teacher.
Chief Magistrate Robert Ekirita said Acaye would testify in the case and adjourned the hearing to September 1, 2026.
