Ugandan singer Lydia Jazmine has revealed that becoming a musician was never part of her original career plan, despite spending much of her school life singing.
Speaking during an interview on DHook, Lydia said she once imagined becoming a lawyer and took her academics seriously.
She scored 21 points in Senior Six, at a time when the maximum was 25, before joining university to study Business Administration and Management.
I remember wanting to be a lawyer or something. I got very good. I got 21 points in Senior Six.
At university, Lydia remained focused on her studies and felt comfortable with her books.
Music, despite being a talent she had nurtured for years, still did not feature in her career plans.
At campus I was doing Business Administration and Management. And I was comfortable there with my books.
What makes her story even more interesting is that Lydia had already been singing throughout her school years.
She simply never viewed it as something she could turn into a profession.
Even though I had the talent to sing, I just had not thought of being an artist. I do not know why. I think I just forgot to say all my life, I was singing. I was singing throughout school.
Her path eventually changed when she joined the GoodLyfe Crew as a backup artist.
Members of the group encouraged her to step out from behind the scenes and explore a solo career, setting her on a path she had never originally planned.
The career she once never imagined eventually became her reality, turning the former aspiring lawyer and Business Administration student into one of Uganda’s established female musicians.
