John Blaq has revealed how much a simple social media interaction with Lydia Jazmine meant to him at a time when he was still dreaming of becoming a musician.
Speaking during a press conference, the singer recalled the first time Lydia Jazmine responded to one of his comments on social media, describing the moment as surprisingly meaningful because, at the time, he was not yet an established artiste.
John Blaq said the interaction stayed with him because Lydia was already an established name who had been supportive of many young artistes finding their way into the industry.
“I remember the first time Lydia Jazmine replied to my comment on social media. I was overwhelmed with joy because I wasn’t an artiste yet,” he said.
For John Blaq, the response may have appeared like a simple social media interaction, but it represented something bigger for a young person hoping to make it in music. It made him feel seen at a time when he was still working towards building a name for himself.
He now looks back at those early moments with appreciation, particularly because Lydia has continued to maintain relationships with several artistes in the industry and, in his view, has been there for many of them at different stages of their careers.
“She has been there for most of us in the industry,” he said.
That history of support is part of what has inspired John Blaq to show his appreciation now that he is in a position to do so.
For him, returning the love is not simply about repaying one social media interaction. It is about recognising people who showed kindness and encouragement before there was anything to gain from it.
“It is time for me to return the love,” he said.
The reflection comes at a time when John Blaq is also celebrating his own growth in the music industry. From being an upcoming artiste seeking recognition to becoming one of Uganda’s recognisable voices, he understands the importance of having established artistes acknowledge and encourage those coming behind them.
His story with Lydia Jazmine therefore offers a reminder that support in the entertainment industry does not always have to come in the form of collaborations, financial assistance or major career opportunities. Sometimes, a simple response, a word of encouragement or acknowledging someone’s potential can leave a lasting impression.
Years after that social media exchange, John Blaq has not forgotten how it made him feel. Now, with the roles somewhat reversed, he says he is ready to celebrate and support Lydia Jazmine in the same spirit she once showed him.
