Ugandan singer-songwriter Joshua Baraka is asking the question many people in complicated relationships have probably asked themselves: what happens if we stop leaving things undefined and actually give love a chance?
That question sits at the heart of his new single, ‘YOYO’, released today as a vibrant and romantic song about navigating the uncertainty, excitement and chemistry that comes with taking a situationship to the next level.
Rather than remain stuck in the grey area between friendship and romance, Baraka uses the song to explore the decision to finally make a relationship official.
The song captures the familiar experience of two people who clearly have feelings for each other but have never quite defined what they are. Through its playful energy and romantic storytelling, Baraka turns that uncertainty into an invitation to take a chance on love.
Adding another layer to the song is its multilingual approach. Baraka moves between English, French, Luganda and Lingala, creating a sound that draws from East African influences while giving the song a broader, cross-cultural appeal.
The combination also reflects the singer’s growing musical identity, particularly his willingness to experiment with language and sound while keeping personal storytelling at the centre of his music.
‘YOYO’ is Baraka’s second single of 2026, following his earlier release this year, and serves as another preview of what listeners can expect from his upcoming project, Recess 2.
The singer took a hands-on approach to the new release, writing and producing the song himself, with additional production from Hendrix Sam.
The track will form part of Recess 2, Baraka’s forthcoming EP, which is expected to further explore his songwriting, versatility and ability to turn intimate experiences into contemporary African pop.
Beyond the music, ‘YOYO’ arrives with a simple message: sometimes love requires someone to stop overthinking the situation and take the risk.
And Baraka is taking that message beyond the studio.
As he rolls out the new single, the singer is also preparing to take his music closer to audiences outside Kampala through a nationwide tour. The tour kicks off this week in Northern Uganda, before moving to West Nile, Eastern Uganda and Western Uganda.
The tour will give fans across the country an opportunity to experience Baraka’s catalogue live while introducing them to ‘YOYO’ ahead of the release of Recess 2.
