Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has held discussions with American actor and musician Tyrese Gibson on opportunities to promote Uganda as a leading tourism and investment destination while strengthening ties between the country’s creative industry and global entertainment networks.
The meeting, held in Entebbe, brought together two influential figures from the security and entertainment sectors to explore how Uganda can leverage its natural resources, cultural heritage and growing creative economy to attract international attention, investment and partnerships.
Gibson, best known for his roles in the Fast & Furious film franchise and other major Hollywood productions, is visiting Uganda at a time when the country is seeking to position tourism and the creative arts as important contributors to economic growth, employment and international engagement.
The discussions with Gen. Kainerugaba focused on ways of using the reach of global entertainment personalities to tell Uganda’s story to international audiences and showcase the country’s tourism potential beyond traditional promotional platforms.
Uganda is endowed with diverse attractions, including mountain gorillas, wildlife, forests, lakes, rivers and a rich cultural heritage. Officials and industry stakeholders have increasingly identified film, music, fashion and other creative industries as complementary tools for promoting these attractions and creating new economic opportunities for young people.
The engagement also explored the potential for stronger connections between international creative personalities and Uganda’s local film, tourism and entertainment sectors.
Such partnerships could create opportunities for local filmmakers, actors, musicians, technicians and other creative professionals to gain exposure to international networks, while allowing Uganda to attract productions, investment and audiences from outside the country.
A key aspect of the discussions was the potential role of the creative industry in youth empowerment. Uganda has a large and youthful population, and expanding opportunities in film, music, digital content production, tourism and related services could provide avenues for skills development, employment and entrepreneurship.
The engagement therefore went beyond tourism promotion, touching on the broader potential of Uganda’s creative economy to contribute to industrialisation and economic transformation.
Gibson’s visit has also included an engagement with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House, Entebbe, where they discussed opportunities in the creative arts, tourism and the promotion of Africa’s shared heritage.
The meeting with the President further examined possibilities for strategic cooperation with the Ugandan Government to strengthen the country’s film and entertainment industry and position creative production as a potential driver of economic growth.
The involvement of an internationally recognised Hollywood personality has also drawn attention to Uganda’s ambition to attract greater global visibility for its creative and tourism sectors.
For Uganda, international film and entertainment partnerships could offer a dual advantage: bringing foreign investment and expertise into the local creative economy while providing international platforms through which the country’s landscapes, culture, people and heritage can be showcased.
Gen. Kainerugaba welcomed Gibson’s visit and his interest in Uganda’s tourism, creative and investment potential, emphasising the importance of building partnerships capable of translating international visibility into tangible opportunities for Ugandans.
Gibson’s programme in Uganda includes visits to selected cultural and tourism attractions as well as engagements with stakeholders in the tourism and creative sectors.
His visit is expected to further expose him to Uganda’s natural and cultural heritage while providing an opportunity to explore areas where international entertainment networks can connect with local talent, businesses and investment opportunities.
The engagement comes amid growing efforts to diversify Uganda’s economic opportunities by linking tourism, culture, entertainment and investment, with the ultimate objective of creating jobs, developing local skills and increasing Uganda’s visibility in international markets.
Beyond the celebrity attention generated by Gibson’s visit, the discussions underscore a broader strategy: using Uganda’s cultural identity, tourism assets and creative talent to build international partnerships that can translate global recognition into sustainable economic opportunities.
