Police have arrested Christian Asiimwe, popularly known as Don Chris, a former director of the now defunct labour recruitment company Sky Pins, over allegations of defrauding Ugandans seeking jobs abroad.
Asiimwe was picked up at about 2am on Thursday from a bar in Zana, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality in Wakiso District, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala.
Police allege that between 2022 and 2025, Asiimwe collected money from people after promising to secure them employment in countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Qatar and Dubai.
The jobs allegedly advertised to applicants included positions as waiters, cleaners and caregivers.
Kawala said the investigation has so far identified more than 500 people who claim to have fallen victim to the scheme.
According to statements recorded by police, applicants were allegedly asked to pay between Shs5 million and Shs10 million, with the amount depending on the job and destination they had chosen.
The arrest comes amid continued warnings over illegal labour recruitment, where Ugandans looking for opportunities abroad are sometimes asked to pay large sums before securing jobs that may not exist.
Police said Asiimwe remains in custody as investigations continue and that he will be produced in court once the investigations are complete.
Authorities have also urged Ugandans planning to seek employment abroad to establish whether recruitment companies and agents are properly licensed before handing over money or signing agreements.
Police are further appealing to anyone with information that could help investigators to report to the nearest police station.
