The driver accused of causing the fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two journalists along Entebbe Road has been remanded to prison until August 31, 2026.

John Baptist Kigozi appeared before the Chief Magistrates Court at Kajjansi on Friday, where he faced five charges arising from the August 7 crash at Nalulanda.
The charges include two counts of causing death by reckless driving, one count of causing injury by reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving.
Kigozi was arrested on August 13 in a joint inter-agency operation, days after the crash that killed Sanyuka TV producer and trade marketing officer Badru Kasirye and digital content creator Isaac Ndamagye. Their colleague, Sanyuka TV presenter Brian “Macona” Ssemanda, survived with serious injuries and was admitted to hospital.

The three were reportedly returning from a celebrity boxing event when the crash occurred in the early hours of August 7. Kasirye died at the scene, while Ndamagye later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Macona was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with serious head injuries.
Macona’s condition has since shown encouraging signs of improvement. Next Media recently announced that doctors had temporarily suspended visits to allow him a conducive environment for recovery, while thanking members of the public for their support and prayers.

Kigozi’s court appearance marks the latest development in a case that has drawn significant attention from Uganda’s media and entertainment fraternity.
On Friday, however, the case could not proceed as scheduled after the magistrate handling the matter was unavailable and the government prosecutor did not appear. The matter was consequently adjourned to August 31.

Lawyers representing the families of Kasirye and Ndamagye have also asked the court to allow them greater participation in the proceedings, saying relatives should be kept informed about developments in a case arising from the deaths of their loved ones.
The court is expected to consider Kigozi’s bail application and other matters when the case returns on August 31.
The crash has continued to weigh heavily on the media and entertainment fraternity, which has mourned Kasirye and Ndamagye while rallying behind Macona as he continues his recovery.
