Singer Elijah Kitaka has once again weighed in on the challenges he believes have contributed to the decline of Uganda’s music industry.
Reflecting on the industry’s performance so far in 2026, Kitaka noted that the year began against a tense political backdrop, which he believes has further affected the entertainment sector.
He called on artists and other industry players to put in more effort and energy to revive the industry.
According to Kitaka, one of the major challenges facing the music industry is the growing number of creatives who have shifted their attention to TikTok and social media content creation, leaving them with less time and energy to concentrate on making music.
Truth be told, the music industry weakened a bit. I think right now, everyone has to ignite more effort and energy to lift the industry.
The good thing is that the world has changed a bit. The weakness is majorly that many of the creatives turned TikTokers. It’s like these days we have a lot to jazz about than doing music.
Kitaka also believes that competition among artists is no longer necessary, arguing that fans are increasingly interested in seeing musicians work together and build a stronger industry through collaborations.
I don’t think we really need competition anymore in the industry. I feel like we’ve competed a lot, and now fans want to see us working and collaborating more.
The singer further questioned the authenticity of relationships among artists, noting that while musicians may appear friendly and jovial whenever they meet, genuine friendships and support among them remain limited.
“The other fact is that you see artists when they meet, they laugh and jazz, but the underlying bitter truth is that we’re not buddies to one another. People are plastic in this business.”
