Tennessee officials want to rename Nashville International Airport after country music legend Dolly Parton following her death on August 25.
Governor Bill Lee and airport officials announced plans to explore the name change on August 28.
Lee said the airport offers a fitting way to honour Parton’s connection to Tennessee.
“At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter.”
The proposal has also gained support from a petition that has collected more than 160,000 signatures.
The campaign began before Parton’s death but gained fresh attention afterward.
The airport must still go through the relevant approval process before officials can change its name.
For now, it remains Nashville International Airport.
