Kampala is preparing for an afternoon of African music, dance and culture as Vuma Piano takes over Méstil Gardens on November 7, with South African Grammy winner Zakes Bantwini leading the line-up.
Bantwini, who won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance alongside Wouter Kellerman and Nomcebo Zikode for their song Bayethe, will bring his Afro-house sound and South African musical influence to Kampala.
Known for blending electronic sounds with African musical traditions, Bantwini is expected to turn the Méstil Gardens stage into a celebration of African sound, with his performance forming the biggest draw of the event.
He will be joined by DJ FKR and a selection of Uganda’s top DJs, creating a cross-border musical mix that brings South African piano grooves together with Kampala’s party energy.
But Vuma Piano is positioning itself as more than an international concert.
The event is designed around African music and culture, combining live performances with fashion, creativity, storytelling and experiential elements. The idea is to give audiences an experience built around the culture surrounding African music, rather than simply watching artists perform on stage.
For Bantwini, the Kampala appearance also offers an opportunity to bring his sound to an audience that has embraced the growing popularity of Afro-house and South African influenced sounds.
The organisers are also taking a different approach to the timing, with the event scheduled to start at 2pm. The early start is intended to give revellers an entire afternoon to enjoy the music, atmosphere and performances before the event moves into the evening.
With Bantwini’s Grammy-winning credentials, DJ FKR and a line-up of Ugandan DJs, Vuma Piano is shaping up as another cross-border meeting point between Uganda’s vibrant entertainment scene and the wider African music movement.
And with the event starting at 2pm, Kampala’s dancing shoes will have plenty of time to put in some overtime.
