Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi has emerged from one of Tooro’s prominent royal families to take the throne following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Unlike some members of the Tooro royal family who have attracted significant public attention over the years, Edward has largely maintained a low profile. Before becoming king, he was better known to many Ugandans as a television journalist and news anchor at the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC).
His elevation to the throne now places him at the centre of the Tooro monarchy and brings the Kijanangoma branch of the Babiito royal family into the kingdom’s highest leadership position.
Edward is the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and a grandson of former Tooro King, Sir George David Rukidi Kamurasi III.
His family has deep roots in the history of the Tooro monarchy, making Edward a direct descendant of one of the kingdom’s royal lines.
The Kijanangoma family, however, has also experienced tragedy and controversy over the years.
One of Edward’s brothers, Prince Charles Happy Kijanangoma, was killed in Fort Portal in March 1999 together with his guard, Stephen Kaganda.
The killing led to the conviction of former Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister John Sanyu Katuramu, who was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of financing the murder.
Years later, Edward was involved in efforts to reconcile the Kijanangoma and Katuramu families.
Reports indicate that Chris Katuramu travelled to Kigali, Rwanda, where he met Edward and sought forgiveness on behalf of his brother. Edward later engaged other members of the Kijanangoma family on the matter.
The two families subsequently held meetings involving relatives and Tooro elders, with Bishop Reuben Kisembo helping to facilitate the reconciliation process.
The episode offered a rare public glimpse into Edward’s role within the royal family before his eventual rise to the throne.
His brother’s dispute with King Oyo
Edward’s family was also at the centre of a major dispute over the Tooro monarchy involving his younger brother, Prince David Kijanangoma.
In 2015, David publicly challenged King Oyo’s leadership and expressed his desire to become the next king. He criticised the administration of the kingdom, calling for greater unity and stronger leadership structures.
The dispute escalated when David occupied Rwengoma Palace, a historic royal residence in Fort Portal. He was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal trespass.
A court later dismissed the case after finding that the evidence presented was insufficient.
The confrontation brought the Kijanangoma family into the spotlight and sparked wider debate about leadership and succession within the Tooro Kingdom.
The royal connection to Rwengoma Palace
Rwengoma Palace has a long-standing connection to the Kijanangoma family and Tooro’s royal history.
Built in 1909 by King David Kasagama Kyebambe, an ancestor of the Kijanangoma family, the palace is located a short distance from Karuziika Palace, the main royal residence in Fort Portal.
Several Tooro kings lived at Rwengoma before their formal installation, giving the palace an important place in the kingdom’s history.
It was also the residence offered to David Kijanangoma in 2015 during his dispute with the late King Oyo.
From television to the throne
Before his designation as king, Edward was known professionally as a journalist.
He worked at UBC as a television news anchor and news editor, making him a familiar face to Ugandans who followed the broadcaster’s English news bulletins.
Colleagues at UBC have described him as humble, hardworking and supportive, particularly in his work with the English Bulletin editing desk.
His career in journalism stands in contrast to the traditional role he now assumes as Omukama, giving him a background outside the usual public profile associated with members of a ruling royal family.
Edward was designated the next Omukama on 9 September 2026 by the 19-member Babiito Clan succession committee following the death of King Oyo.
Oyo died in the United States on 27 August 2026 at the age of 34, bringing an end to a reign that began in 1995 when he was only three years old.
Edward now inherits a monarchy that has endured political changes, internal disagreements and several generations of leadership.
His immediate responsibility will be to guide the kingdom through the transition following King Oyo’s death and help unite the royal family and the wider Tooro community.
