  • Pier One’s Fourth Anniversary: A Ladipoe, Don Julio And Johnnie Walker Affair

Pier One’s Fourth Anniversary: A Ladipoe, Don Julio And Johnnie Walker Affair

Some milestones deserve more than a toast. They deserve a celebration the size of the milestone.

And few brands understand that better than Johnnie Walker- the world’s most iconic whisky, and Don Julio- the world’s first luxury tequila. Together, the two global icons transformed Pier One Lounge’s fourth anniversary into an unforgettable night, where luxury, music and unforgettable moments came together in spectacular fashion.

Long before Nigerian rapper Ladipoe stepped onto the stage, the celebration had already found its rhythm, as Kampala’s nightlife enthusiasts streamed into the waterfront venue. Greetings turned into reunions and anticipation filled the air.

Every corner of Pier One buzzed with expectation, as guests settled in for an evening that promised premium cocktails, memorable performances and a celebration worth the four-year journey.

Whenever a Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve bottle was ordered, the venue transformed, as the brand brought their signature Johnnie Walker Bottle Turn-Up experience to life.

The smartly dressed waitresses swept through the crowd with illuminated bottle presentations, sparklers, music and the unmistakable “Dorime” anthem, punctuated by the celebratory ring of the gong.

Conversations paused, neighbouring tables erupted into applause, and dozens of phones instinctively rose into the air to capture the spectacle.

Don Julio did not leave anything to chance, with every 1942 bottle arriving with its own unmistakable sense of occasion, reinforcing the evening’s shared message: milestones deserve to be celebrated with style.

Away from the bottle rituals, the celebration continued at the cocktail bar, where guests explored signature serves, including the Pier Kiss and Pier Tonic, alongside premium pours from both Don Julio and Johnnie Walker. Together, the two brands curated an experience that moved beyond drinks, creating moments guests could see, hear and share.

DJ Litto opened the night with an energetic dancehall set that effortlessly blended Ugandan favourites with international hits, setting the tone for the celebrations.

By the time Ladipoe walked on stage, in the early hours of the morning, the audience barely needed an invitation. He performed chart-topping hits including ‘Know You’, ‘Feeling’ and ‘Overdose’, as thousands of voices joined his, turning the performance into one giant singalong.

“I really wanna tell how my day was… but I don’t really know you that well…” For a few unforgettable minutes, strangers became one choir, united by lyrics they all knew by heart.

The energy barely had time to settle, as Don Julio 1942 influencer Sheilah Gashumba aka Lil Stunner, took over the decks. Her seamless blend of Amapiano and Afro-electronic sounds reignited the dance floor, drawing cheers from guests who stayed until the final beat.

For Judie Nandekya, the Senior Brand Manager, Tequila and Rum East Africa, partnering with Pier One @4 reflected a shared belief that milestones deserve to be celebrated in extraordinary fashion.

“We congratulate Pier One for reaching this milestone. Making four years in the hospitality and service industry is no easy feat. We are happy to have partnered with Pier One, and together with Johnnie Walker, we believe we’ve delivered a milestone celebration with the journey,” she said.

“As Don Julio, these are the moments that inspire us to show up for our consumers, because every milestone deserves to be commemorated in a luxurious and memorable way. Congratulations to Pier One once again.”

As the lights slowly dimmed and the final songs echoed across the venue, Pier One’s anniversary had become much more than a birthday celebration.

It was a reflection of Kampala’s evolving nightlife culture, where premium experiences matter just as much as the music, where every bottle arrival becomes part of the entertainment, and where brands like Don Julio and Johnnie Walker are helping redefine what it means to celebrate life’s milestones.

  • President criticizes expensive weddings for scaring youth from marriage

President criticizes expensive weddings for scaring youth from marriage

President Yoweri Museveni has urged the Banyankole community to abandon excessive bride price demands and extravagant wedding ceremonies, saying the growing commercialization of marriage is discouraging young people from starting families and undermining the cultural value of the traditional Okuhingira ceremony.

The President made the remarks on Saturday while presiding over the Okuhingira ceremony of Kisha Isabel Byanjeru Kaboyo, daughter of State Minister for Luweero Triangle and Rwenzori Region Alice Kaboyo, at Kakyeera in Kiruhura District.

Museveni said demanding large amounts of money and livestock as bride price has turned marriage into a financial burden for many young couples.

You, the Banyankole, are damaging the population with this thing of Okujugusa (paying bride price). Why ask for 15 cows and millions of shillings? Why are you selling your children? You make young people fear marriage and, unfortunately, some begin their lives together in debt.

Museveni also criticized lavish wedding celebrations, arguing that they place unnecessary pressure on families to spend beyond their means. He used his own marriage to First Lady Janet Museveni as an example, noting that they held a modest ceremony abroad attended by only eight guests at a luncheon.

I have 15 grandchildren. I wedded Maama Janet abroad with only eight guests at a luncheon. These extravagant weddings are going to disturb people. I urge religious leaders to address this issue through their preaching.

The President called on cultural and religious leaders to promote simpler marriage practices that preserve the meaning of the Okuhingira ceremony while making it easier for young people to marry without falling into debt.

He said reducing the financial demands associated with marriage would encourage more families to embrace the institution and help preserve its cultural significance.

  • MC Kats slams Ugandan TV stations for hiring TikTok noisemakers over real talent

MC Kats slams Ugandan TV stations for hiring TikTok noisemakers over real talent

Ugandan media personality Edwin Katamba a.k.a MC Kats has expressed his discontent with how media stations in Uganda today employ presenters based on their viral content on TikTok, rather than professional media talent.

In an interview with Dr. Mich Egwang, MC Kats, who has worked at the best TV stations in Uganda, including WBS TV, NTV Uganda, and NBS TV, revealed how, before quitting presenting on TV, he analysed the crop of presenters on different TV stations.

His findings highlighted a common factor: that most of them had been hired based on their viral content on TikTok.

Before quitting TV, I looked at different TV stations and their respective presenters, apart from the seniors like Dagy Nyce, Douglas (Lwanga), and Calvin (Da Entertainer), and I was like, “I can’t be on TV with a TikToker who blasphems, with a girl who just showed her nudes and they’re working on national TV. I can’t be in this box anymore!”

He believes that this has ruined the quality of journalism in mainstream media because most of these personalities became viral sensations due to obscene content and nudity.

Social media numbers (hold the power now). You think people still go for screen tests as I went to WBS TV? It’s about how many people you have on TikTok, how much noise you make on TikTok, and you’re given a TV show. You learn from the job.

What royalty row reveals about business of music – Sqoop

When the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) announced the distribution of Shs216 million in royalties to eligible rights holders this year, it should have been a moment of celebration for Uganda’s music industry. Instead, it triggered one of the most intense debates the country’s copyright ecosystem has witnessed in recent years. The controversy reached its peak after celebrated musician Douglas Mayanja, alias Weasel, publicly disclosed that he had received Shs285,498 in royalties.

To many fans and industry players, the figure appeared inconceivable for one half of Radio and Weasel, arguably one of Uganda’s most commercially successful music duos whose catalogue has dominated airwaves, concerts and public spaces for nearly two decades. The payment immediately ignited accusations of inefficiency, opacity and possible mismanagement within Uganda’s royalty system. Soon after, Goodlyfe Magic Limited announced its intention to terminate UPRS’ mandate over the Radio and Weasel catalogue, citing concerns over transparency and confidence in the collective management system. What followed was not merely a disagreement over one payment…………………..CONTINUE READING…………………………………..

  • How social values and morals have declined in the music industry – MC Kats

How social values and morals have declined in the music industry – MC Kats

MC Kats has revealed that the entertainment industry has drastically changed, and social values, talent, and morals are no longer held high, making actual talent frustrated and pushed out of the system.

While on the LXS podcast with Dr. Mich Egwang, MC Kats noted how talent was the main factor that determined if someone became a star.

In comparison to today, Kats believes a lot has changed for the worse and stars are determined by money, technical know-how, and their influence on the sexual network.

Right now it’s about money, technical know-who, who you’re sleeping with, who you know. Back then you had to be talented.

MC Kats went on to highlight how obscenity has now become a major avenue for media personalities and celebrities looking to grow their numbers, and they are increasingly unbothered by how society perceives them as long as their views and numbers on social media are growing.

Obscenity: if you can come off unabashed, when you don’t care even if you say a big word, you’re gonna run like dynamite. You don’t care whether your sextape comes out, as long as you’re building numbers. Back then we had church and parents on us; we had values.
