Creative Process: How a Rolex inspired A Pass’s hit song ‘Buwooma’

Buwooma, the last song recorded on A Pass and Kaboo’s album ‘Miracles’, has turned out to be the biggest on the album, but what did it take to create such a masterpiece?

Buwooma” loosely translates to “It is sweet.” In the song, A Pass sings about how sweet life is. In a brief chat with Mbu, A Pass reveals that the project is inspired by the desire to enjoy life.

A Pass and Kaboo

The Audio

A Pass, real name Alexander Bagonza, reveals that when the beat for the track was initially sent to him, it took time for him to find an approach on how to lyricise it.

A week later, while eating a rolex (a local delicacy of chapati and fried eggs rolled together), he envisioned how sweet life can get and started humming the chorus before recording it on his phone.

He later got in touch with Kaboo and Tryton Muzik, and the song was recorded.

Recording Buwooma was tricky because the time I had to record it, I felt like I couldn’t find the right way to approach the beat, because it was a bit different. I told Kaboo I needed time, so they gave me a week.

When they returned, I still had no idea. I was eating a Rolex, the beat was playing, and I just started humming and playing around. I was trying to find something sweet. In my mind, I was cooking up something nice hence the line “byofumba biwooma.”

The first verse is about Dora in a happening place, enjoying herself. Verse two is about drinking, and I wanted people to feel it. How do you have everyone involved in this song? That’s the whole idea when we were creating, and I am also surprised by how fast the song has moved.

The Video

The video was shot in Entebbe, and according to A Pass, the concept portrays the communal way of enjoying in Africa, where different tribes and people gather to drink Malwa (a local brew) from the same pot.

The video has almost the same concept as Desire’s (Luzinda), GNL Zamba’s Soda Jinjale – the videos that show the traditional way of people doing malwa. We found a place in Entebbe that had so many hats and different tribes with Malwa made for them.

We shot it on a Sunday, and the people were very good to us. We wanted to bring out the life of how you felt in primary when they explained to you how Africa was, how the Malwa drinking was communal. I think that’s why people like it.
