Veteran singer Juliana Kanyomozi believes Uganda’s music industry is yet to produce a young artiste who truly mirrors the talent, determination and artistic journey that defined her early career.
Speaking in a recent interview, the award-winning musician said that although the industry is home to many gifted performers, she has not come across anyone she would describe as the modern-day Juliana Kanyomozi.
“I haven’t seen anyone yet. I would probably have to think about it more, but I haven’t seen a Juliana of 30 years ago. The Juliana of that time was a young artiste trying to find herself, and I haven’t seen that yet,” she said.
However, Juliana revealed that one singer once reminded her of her younger self. She singled out gospel artiste Racheal Namubiru, whom she first encountered during the fourth season of Tusker Project Fame in 2010, where Juliana served as one of the judges.
According to Juliana, Namubiru’s vocal ability and stage presence immediately stood out, making her believe the young singer had the qualities to become one of Uganda’s leading female artists.
“I used to see myself in her, but she disappeared. I don’t know where she went. She was called Racheal Namubiru. She reminded me of the Juliana from the Sabrina’s Pub days because of her vocals and everything. I think she’s now a gospel singer, but I don’t know where she is,” she said.
Namubiru later ventured into gospel music and released songs such as Nzize, earning praise for her powerful voice. Despite the promising start, she gradually faded from the spotlight and has remained largely absent from the mainstream music scene.
Juliana’s remarks come at a time when a new generation of Ugandan artists continues to emerge, with many making significant strides both locally and internationally.
