Nigerian rapper YCee believes social media has changed the music industry, and not for the better.
The “Jagaban” hitmaker says platforms like TikTok have made it easier for people with little musical ability to break into the industry simply by going viral.
Speaking during an interview with Naija FM Lagos, YCee argued that the chase for online attention has shifted the industry’s focus away from genuine talent.
Platforms like TikTok have made it easier for a lot of people to do music to the extend that even someone who is not an artist would start posing as a artist once they do a sound and it goes viral.
He believes record labels now pay more attention to trends than artistry.
Sadly, music executives with power and funding no longer focus only on talent—they are now chasing virality.
According to YCee, that shift has contributed to the rise of what he described as “accident artists” and a decline in lyrical substance across the industry.
