Satire, shade and basslines with Bebe Cool’s Kakebere – Sqoop

If you grew up on Bebe Cool classics such as Kasepiki, Bogolako, Kapere and Coccidiosis, Kakebere will feel comfortably familiar. It is vintage Bebe Cool—bold, confrontational, witty and unapologetically provocative.

Lifted from his latest EP No Risk, the track serves as a musical response to the critics, detractors and online commentators who, in Bebe’s view, have made a career out of attacking him. Yet rather than sounding defensive, he transforms criticism into entertainment.

Produced by Gagamel’s in-house producer Ronie, Kakebere opens with a hard-hitting dancehall rhythm that immediately commands attention. Heavy drums, deep basslines and polished production give the song a contemporary sound while retaining the unmistakable pulse of Kampala’s nightlife.

Few Ugandan artists deliver dancehall with Bebe Cool’s confidence, and here he reminds listeners why he remains one of the genre’s most enduring figures. His vocal delivery is measured and authoritative, gliding effortlessly over the instrumental with the ease of someone who has spent decades perfecting his craft.

Beneath the infectious rhythm lies a central message: verify before you believe.

Throughout the song, Bebe cautions listeners against accepting rumours, misinformation and public narratives at face value. Whether referencing gossip, politics, business or everyday life, he repeatedly urges people to question what they hear before embracing it as truth.

It is a theme that resonates in an age dominated by social media, where misinformation often travels faster than facts. Social commentary has long been one of Bebe Cool’s trademarks, and Kakebere continues that tradition.

Among the song’s standout moments are several cryptic lines that have already sparked debate.

One lyric references “a famous Ugandan musician” allegedly losing his sanity after consuming unchecked drinks, while elsewhere Bebe paints surreal images of goats eating meat, people feeding on grass and a gorilla wearing shoes in Busabala that should be taken to Entebbe for medical attention.

The exaggerated imagery borders on absurdity, but that is precisely what gives it its appeal. By exaggerating society’s contradictions, Bebe injects humour while inviting listeners to decode the hidden meanings. He deliberately avoids mentioning names, allowing speculation to do the promotional work for him.

Musically, Kakebere succeeds because it balances message with entertainment. It is equally capable of igniting a dancefloor as it is provoking conversation once the music stops.

Production remains one of the song’s strongest assets. The beat is spacious without feeling empty, with crisp percussion and a bassline designed for clubs, radio and streaming platforms alike.

Where the track falls slightly short is in originality.

Kakebere does not significantly expand Bebe Cool’s musical formula. Long-time listeners will recognise familiar songwriting patterns and dancehall structures that have defined much of his catalogue. While the production feels fresher, the composition largely stays within territory he has explored before.

That, however, may not be a weakness.

For many fans, the appeal lies precisely in hearing the Bebe Cool they have always known—only with sharper production, stronger vocals and a renewed sense of purpose. In that regard, Kakebere delivers exactly what it promises.

Among the songs on No Risk, which also includes Melodies, Kiss & Make Up, Target, Joromai, Bundle and Shekete, Kakebere emerges as the project’s boldest statement—an energetic blend of satire, social commentary and dancehall that is almost certain to keep conversations going long after the music fades.
