President Yoweri Museveni has directed Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to release former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among from house arrest, potentially ending months of restrictions imposed on her.
Muhoozi announced the presidential directive on Tuesday morning, confirming that Among would be released as instructed by the President.
“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest,” Muhoozi said, referring to Among by her initials. “We shall do that as well.”
Among had stepped aside from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid investigations into allegations relating to corruption, wealth declaration and the financial management of Parliament.
She was subsequently replaced as Speaker by Jacob Oboth Oboth, who was elected to lead the 12th Parliament.
The presidential directive could now mark a major development in Among’s situation, following months of restrictions as authorities pursued inquiries into the allegations surrounding her tenure and the management of Parliament.
