Kampala — Media mogul Kin Kariisa’s Next Media Services has finalized the 100% acquisition of Capital Radio 2015 Limited, bringing one of Uganda’s most iconic radio networks under its direct control.

The transaction, confirmed on Wednesday, integrates Capital FM, Beat FM, and KIIS 100.9 FM into the Next Media ecosystem. The full takeover comes less than a month after the move was initially framed as a “strategic collaboration” on June 23, 2026.

According to company registration records, Next Media acquired 1,417 shares (70.01%), while Kariisa personally acquired the remaining 607 shares (29.99%)—securing complete control of all 2,024 issued shares in Capital Radio 2015 Limited.

From Partnership to Full Takeover
The initial June announcement pitched the deal as a non-equity partnership focused on joint advertising, cross-platform engagement, and content sharing while promising to preserve editorial independence.

Capital Radio co-owner Patrick Quarcoo led a high-level delegation to the Next Media Park in Naguru to mark the deal.

However, industry sources reveal the arrangement quickly evolved into a outright buyout, valued at approximately Shs12 billion. The figure covers Capital Radio’s extensive transmitter infrastructure, regional frequency licenses, and brand goodwill. Capital FM has long stood as one of East Africa’s most profitable commercial radio assets, having previously absorbed Hot 100 FM less than three years ago.

Tightening the Grip on Ugandan Media
The acquisition marks a major expansion for Next Media, which already dominates television broadcasting with NBS TV, Sanyuka TV, and Afro Mobile, along with existing digital and print assets. By plugging Capital FM and its sister stations directly into its ecosystem, Kariisa now commands an unprecedented share of Uganda’s daily broadcast reach.

The deal has sent ripples through the media industry, raising concerns among market analysts regarding media consolidation, reduced advertising competition, and the shrinking independence of legacy newsrooms in Uganda.
When contacted for an official statement regarding the shift from partnership to full ownership, Next Media management declined to elaborate beyond earlier public statements.
Further details regarding management restructuring, staffing changes, and regulatory compliance checks by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) are expected in the coming weeks.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today welcomed the establishment of the HUVET Bio-Science Park, describing it as a major step towards Uganda’s vaccine sovereignty and its ambition to become a regional leader in biotechnology.

“I am very happy to receive this wonderful group of investors from Iran. I welcome you, and I will support you,” President Museveni said during a meeting with a team of engineers and doctors led by Eng. Hashem Azimi, at State House, Entebbe.

The proposed HUVET Bio-Science Park is expected to spearhead Uganda’s roadmap towards local vaccine production, veterinary biotechnology, and scientific innovation while reducing dependence on imported vaccines and biological products.

During the meeting, Eng. Azimi recounted his first encounter with President Museveni in 2008 during the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit in Kampala. He said the President challenged him with a simple but significant question about whether his company intended to venture into manufacturing.

“At that time, I answered honestly and told you that manufacturing was part of our long-term vision. We were not yet ready, but it was our destination,” Eng. Azimi said.

“Your Excellency, today, 18 years later, I stand before you to fulfill that promise. This project is not simply the construction of another factory. It is the realization of a vision that has matured through years of experience, investment, scientific collaboration, and a deep belief in Uganda’s potential.”

Eng. Azimi noted that after living and working in Uganda for nearly two decades, he had witnessed the country’s economic transformation under President Museveni’s leadership but also observed the heavy economic burden caused by livestock diseases and the country’s reliance on imported vaccines.

He explained that rather than asking what Uganda could do for the investors, the team instead asked what they could build for Uganda, an idea that gave birth to the HUVET Bio-Science Park.

“Our vision goes far beyond manufacturing vaccines. We seek to establish East Africa’s first fully integrated biotechnology hub dedicated to animal health, food security, epidemic preparedness, biotechnology research and high-value exports,” he said.

According to Eng. Azimi, the project aims to position Uganda as a regional centre of excellence in veterinary biotechnology, serving not only Uganda but the wider African continent. He also informed President Museveni that land for the HUVET Bio-Science Park has already been secured in Mpigi District, marking a significant milestone towards the implementation of the project.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of State for Animal Industry in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hon. Bright Rwamirama, together with engineers and medical professionals involved in the proposed biotechnology project.

King Saha‘s Tondeka e Kololo Festival has gained another vote of confidence, this time from Mummy Gadgets.

The electronics dealer has purchased 150 concert tickets, choosing to reward loyal clients with an evening at one of Uganda’s most anticipated music events instead of the usual giveaways.

The company says the tickets form part of its customer appreciation programme, giving clients an opportunity to celebrate alongside thousands of King Saha fans at Kololo Airstrip.

The purchase also reflects the growing confidence surrounding the festival as businesses increasingly embrace the concert as an experience worth sharing with customers, employees and partners.

King Saha will headline the Tondeka e Kololo Festival on August 14, where he hopes to deliver one of the biggest performances of his career.

The clarification comes after the challenge sparked widespread speculation online, with many fans believing the pair had gone public with their relationship.

There was dramatic tension at the High Court in Kampala on Wednesday after opposition veteran Dr. Kizza Besigye suddenly collapsed in the dock during the hearing of his treason case.

The courtroom was thrown into confusion as lawyers, court officials and security personnel rushed to his aid, forcing the proceedings to stop.

The incident came shortly after the prosecution called its first witness, Andy Wilson Orlando, a British-American national expected to testify against Besigye and his co-accused.

Before the witness could proceed with testimony, Besigye repeatedly objected to the continuation of the trial. He insisted that his constitutional right to choose his own lawyers had been violated after he rejected the lawyers appointed by the state.

Besigye told the judge that his personal legal team had withdrawn from the case because of intimidation and security concerns, and argued that he should not be forced to proceed with lawyers he did not select.

Justice Emmanuel Baguma rejected the request to halt the trial, ruling that the accused had been given enough time to consult the state-appointed advocates and that the hearing could continue even as another High Court judge considers a separate application challenging the legal representation arrangement.

Court assessors were then sworn in, a move Besigye also opposed.

His co-accused, UPDF Capt. Denis Oola, told court that he had accepted the state-appointed legal team, including Sarah Awero, Julius Serwangala and Sylvia Namawejje.

Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale maintained that they were still reviewing a list of more than 700 advocates under the state brief scheme and had not yet made a final choice of counsel. They argued that the lawyers appointed by the state lacked the experience needed for a case involving complex constitutional, international and electronic evidence.

Moments later, as the prosecution began presenting evidence, Besigye suddenly slumped in the dock.

The development triggered immediate concern inside the courtroom. Proceedings were halted as court personnel and security officers responded.

Lawyers Lulume Bayiga and Nicholas Kamara attempted to reach Besigye to provide first aid, but prison officers initially prevented them from accessing him, leading to a brief standoff before court officials intervened.

Two ambulances later arrived at the High Court premises, and Besigye was eventually taken away for medical attention.

The dramatic collapse came against the backdrop of a bitter dispute over legal representation. Besigye has largely been representing himself after members of his defence team stopped appearing in court.

The lawyers previously cited what they described as a hostile environment for the defence, including the arrest of lead counsel Erias Lukwago and the refusal to allow Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua entry into Uganda.

Earlier this month, the High Court ruled that the treason trial would proceed despite objections relating to the absence of the accused persons’ preferred lawyers.

Besigye, Hajj Obeid Lutale and UPDF Capt. Denis Oola are accused of plotting to overthrow the government through alleged meetings held in Uganda and abroad. All three deny the charges.

By press time, no official statement had been issued on Besigye’s condition, and court had not announced when the hearing would resume.
